T&D would like to thank Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd for the following guest blog.

Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd Seddon Plant & Engineer Ltdis one of the UK’s leading distributors and manufacturers of equipment for market sectors including plant and tool hire, construction, civil engineering, utilities and groundcare.

The company has recently diversified into environmental products and Business Development Director Neil Beswick talks about the need for construction and industrial companies to prevent pollution in order to avoid potential prosecution and environmental fines.

The construction and industrial sectors are major sources of pollution, creating more water pollution incidents than many other sectors. When hydrocarbons such as oil, diesel and petrol get into the waterways, they poison water life and any animals that drink from them. Hydrocarbons on sites can also soak into the groundwater, a source of human drinking water.

This is such a problem that in a single month in 2013, the Environment Agency prosecuted UK companies for pollution and environmental crime, resulting in fines totalling over £800,000 and additional legal costs for those companies totalling more than £170,000.

EnviroPad Green RhinoAt Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd, we have partnered with Capture Green Environmental Solutions to help organisations comply with environmental legislation.

We’ve launched a really innovative product called the Green Rhino® EnviroPad which is a revolutionary form of drip tray that utilises unique polymer technology to capture and retain spills and drips from workplace activities when using or storing tools, generators, plant, fuel containers or other items that can cause leakage of hydrocarbons into the environment.

The EnviroPad is unlike any other product on the market as it incorporates a smart membrane with polymer technology contained within to capture and retain hydrocarbons.

Other products on the market simply absorb oil like a sponge but the EnviroPad offers huge advantages in that it retains and ‘locks in’ hydrocarbons into the polymer, massively reducing the risk of pollution entering the environment.

Oil and other hydrocarbons are instantly trapped, solidified and immobilised into a non-leaching, dry rubber-like mass, ensuring that hazardous fluids are removed to non-detectable levels.

With a wide range of uses and applications, the EnviroPad can be placed directly underneath plant equipment to prevent oil pollution or it can be used for the on-site repair and maintenance of smaller equipment such as Brushcutters and Cut-off Saws.

It is also suitable for storing oil containers or for the seating of larger plant that can leak oil, such as Compressors and Generators. Basically any application where a traditional drip tray would normally be used.

We have three sizes of EnviroPad available - small, medium and large - and the biggest can retain up to 28 litres of hydrocarbons.

It can be repeatedly used until it is completely solidified, at which point it can simply be disposed of into standard hazardous waste bins.

Since we launched the EnviroPad earlier this year, we’ve had a phenomenal response, from customers and across our sector. We’re delighted that it’s won two awards in as many months, which really has confirmed its green credentials.

In November 2014 we went to The Houses of Parliament to collect a Gold Level Green Apple Environmental Award for Best Practice, which was the highest level in the ‘Pollution Prevention’ category of the awards.

The Green Apple Environmental Awards are a national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities and we competed against more than 500 other nominations.

A month earlier in October, the EnviroPad won the Environmental Innovation Award at the North West Green Hero Awards. We beat off strong competition from organisations across Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside to be crowned winner of the award.

We are extremely proud to receive these two awards for the EnviroPad and it’s really pleasing to receive recognition for the product’s ability to reduce environmental impact and improve sustainability.
